This year's IFS Lecture Series was kicked off by Junior Professor Hanna Beißert from the DIPF Leibniz Institute for Human Development and Goethe University Frankfurt. In her lecture "Giftedness, talent development and gender – On the role of socialization and role expectations", she reported on giftedness- and achievement-related gender differences and explained how teachers' role expectations influence assignment to giftedness diagnostics and support. She presented biological and psychosocial causes for gender differences and outlined how parents/family, educators/teachers, peers, and the media transport gender stereotypes and thus socialize children and adolescents in the development of their role expectations. The content of the presentation and implications for research and practice were discussed in the plenary session.
