Student motivation is not only an important determinant for commitment and perseverance at university, but is also crucial for academic success. The focus of this study is on short-term changes in the motivational beliefs of students in advanced mathematics courses.

Student motivation is not only an important determinant for commitment and perseverance at university, but is also crucial for academic success. Drawing on the expectancy-value theory, the study focuses on short-term changes in the motivational beliefs of students in advanced mathematics courses over the period of a semester.

Such courses often pose hurdles to future success in this area and many students fail to overcome these. Six cohorts of students from three mathematical-scientific degree programs in the introductory phase are followed (N = 1113, two years with three cohorts each).
