The publication "Reciprocal associations between confidence in getting social support and academic expectancies and subjective task values: Stronger for first-generation and transfer students" by Hanna Gaspard et al. examines the role of social support in relation to the motivation of university students. For this purpose, the researchers collected longitudiinal data from students at the University of Southern California as part of their study (2019/2020). The results show that social support is a crucial factor for motivation at university, particularly for first-generation students and those transferring from community colleges. Overall, the study highlights that students who are the first in their families to attend university or who transfer from one institution to another are rely more on social support.
