The IFS is hosting its 5th Virtual Keynote Series on “Language and learning in multilingual families and classrooms” in January 2025.

Under the direction of Professor Birgit Heppt, the IFS is hosting its 5th Virtual Keynote Series on the topic of “Language and learning in multilingual families and classrooms” in January. In two sessions, internationally renowned researchers will present their current research on the topic and exchange ideas with the participants. In the first session on January 13, 2025, the focus will be on “Learning conditions and trajectories”, with Professor Monica Melby-Lervåg from the University of Oslo, Norway, speaking on the topic of “Factors underlying academic performance in children living in poverty: Knowledge from low and middle income countries” and Professor Erica Hoff from Florida State University, USA, on the topic of “Common patterns and individual differences in bilingual development: Evidence from a longitudinal study of children in immigrant families”. In the second session on January 20, 2025, the focus will be on “Designing and evaluating targeted interventions”. Professor James Kim from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, USA, will give a presentation on “Rethinking the reading crisis: Why far transfer should be the gold standard of literacy research” and Professor Fuhui Tong from Texas A&M University, USA, will give a talk on “From ESL to EFL: Localizing an evidence-based oral English curriculum with virtual professional development and home literacy practices for underprivileged elementary students”.
