Workshop on ‘Learning Analytics’ took place at the IFS with participants from all over Germany.

The interdisciplinary research profile From Prediction to Agile Interventions in the Social Sciences (FAIR) was organising a workshop on learning analytics at the TU Dortmund University from September 25–27. Learning analytics is the collection, analysis, and visualization of detailed data about learning processes, and aims to provide learners with information about their learning process, as well as researchers the possibility to conduct fine-grained analyses on learning processes.

In the first part of the workshop Effective dashboard design and data visualization for Learning Analytics, Junior-Professor Ioana Jivet from the FernUni in Hagen and Junior-Professor Maren Scheffel from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum introduced the design of dashboards. Principles and guidelines of data visualization were considered and a structured approach to the “why”, “what” and “how” of effective dashboard design for learning analytics was developed. Participants were introduced to the guidelines of dashboard design, analyzed and interpreted examples of LA dashboards and created their own dashboard designs.

In the second part, Dr. Jan Delcker, Joana Heil and Yvonne Fromm from the University of Mannheim presented the research field of learning analytics. They showed which educational data can be relevant, how it can be analyzed and which interpretation and intervention possibilities arise for teachers. Space was created for the diverse teaching experiences and challenges of the participants in order to facilitate an open discussion that also addressed ethical issues and data protection.

In the third part, the participants presented their own research projects that could be worked on using the topics described in the workshop. The presentations included contributions on learning analytics in higher education, at school and machine learning approaches. The workshop was concluded with an exchange between the participants on various topics that were discussed, such as the selection of log data, data formats, analysis methods, and interpretation options.
