The data collection phase of the study on promoting motivation in civic education (MIiCE) was successfully completed with 19 classes.

The “Motivational Interventions in Civic Education” (MIiCE) project investigates whether brief interventions can be used to foster students’ motivation. After 40 appointments at schools during this school year, the data collection phase was successfully completed last week. A total of 19 ninth-grade classes, comprising approximately 390 students, participated in the study. Each class was visited three times since the fall to examine the effects of the developed intervention using a pre-post-follow-up design.

The brief intervention is intended to help students develop mindsets conducive to learning about politics, perceive themselves as a significant part of society, and recognize the value of learning about political and social issues. The study examines whether the intervention has an impact on students’ motivation and emotions regarding both political learning and their learning behavior. The results are intended to help understand motivational processes in civic education and provide teachers with strategies for designing civic education classes that foster students’ motivation.

Special thanks go to all participating students, the supporting teachers and schools, as well as IFS staff who assisted with data collection. Following the upcoming data preparation and analysis, we look forward to sharing initial insights into the results soon.
