Education researcher Professor Nele McElvany outlines recommendations for action in elementary schools

In Germany, there is intense political and public debate about potential regulations on children’s and adolescents’ access to social media. Against this backdrop, the Aktionsrat Bildung has addressed the topic of “Social Media – Education – Integrity” in its expert report . While social media offers opportunities, it also poses significant risks for children. In light of these developments, the Aktionsrat Bildung advocates for government regulation of access to social media for children and adolescents. In elementary schools, use outside of educational purposes should be prohibited. At the same time, the expert panel proposes the new educational goal of “media integrity” so that children can develop the skills to navigate the digital space safely and responsibly at an early age. From the experts’ perspective, this requires a combination of clear rules, responsible platform design, and early education.
