In light of the fact that diverse childhoods, the pluralization of families, social inequalities and heterogeneity present educational institutions and society with a socially complex situation, the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia has set up the Enquete Commission I “Equal Opportunities in Education”. Key questions include what children need to do well at school, how they can get off to a good start at elementary school and how they can successfully change to secondary school. As an expert, Professor McElvany contributed her expertise to the topic of “Heterogeneity and Diversity” and emphasized that dealing productively with heterogeneity is one of the key challenges in our education system. Furthermore, the implementation of effective approaches is not only highly relevant for the individual children and their families, but also for society, the economy and politics. She believes that an important developmental step for the education system in North Rhine-Westphalia is the introduction of general standardized diagnostics in order to be able to take binding and targeted support measures in time before the start of school, as well as their continuation in elementary school.
