- News

What do current studies say about the development of educational performance? What challenges are schools currently facing and what role does education research play in this?
Education journalist Jan-Martin Wiarda discusses these and other questions in his podcast “Wiarda wundert sich” (Wiarda wonders) with Professor Nele McElvany, Director of the Center for Research on Education and School Development (IFS) at TU Dortmund University: A conversation about the results of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) and the role of nationwide and internationally comparative education monitoring, the importance of targeted language support, findings from the “Studie zur Entwicklung politischer und gesellschaftlicher Kompetenz im Jugendalter” (study on the development of political and social competence in adolescence) (EPKO), and questions of teacher training. The central question: how can research findings be translated into truly effective school development? Among other things, Nele McElvany emphasizes the importance of continuous dialogue between education research and practice – for example, in IFS transfer formats such as “Tuesdays for Education,” the IFS Education Dialogue, or the new UA Ruhr Research Community Future of Education.
