Well-being in Secondary School: Influencing Factors Vary Depending on Learning Environment

Well-being is considered a central educational goal and is becoming increasingly important—in part because it is linked to student performance. For both students at the Gymnasium and those in other school types, however, exhaustion and skills play a particularly central role; differences between school types are most evident in the relevance of family factors. This is shown by an analysis of data from the National Education Panel Study (NEPS) at the Center for Research on Education and School Development (IFS) at TU Dortmund University. The results suggest that students should be given differentiated feedback on their strengths and weaknesses to avoid the negative implications of poor performance on their well-being.
