Dr. Ulrich Ludewig discusses the reading crisis, the PIRLS findings, the importance of early literacy support, and what other countries do better.

In the podcast Hungry Minds – A Generation Makes Demands  journalist Ronja Ebeling talks with her guests about topics related to the life and work prospects of the younger generation. Dr. Ulrich Ludewig from the IFS is a guest on the latest episode.

The episode “How Serious Is the Reading Crisis?” addresses the growing challenges of promoting reading in Germany. During the discussion, Dr. Ulrich Ludewig explains the key findings of PIRLS and assesses their significance for education and society.

About a quarter of fourth-graders do not meet the minimum standard in reading. These children are not yet able to use reading confidently as a tool for learning, which affects their performance in nearly all school subjects and often persists into secondary school.

Another major focus of the conversation is the importance of early language and literacy support. Shared reading at home, early access to books, and programs such as Lesestart 1-2-3 can play a crucial role in strengthening reading skills and reducing educational inequalities.

Ludewig concludes by emphasizing that the reading crisis has far-reaching consequences for educational success, social participation, and the future skilled workforce. Reversing this trend requires early prevention, evidence-based reading interventions, and stronger support for schools.
