World Book Day 2025 – IFS campaigns for the promotion of reading

On April 23, 2025, bookstores, libraries, publishers and schools as well as book lovers and reading enthusiasts will celebrate a major reading festival - the UNESCO World Book Day.
In addition to the importance of books, the ability to read also plays an important role on World Book Day. However, the latest Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) has shown that average reading skills in Germany have fallen significantly compared to 2001. Around a quarter of primary school pupils do not achieve sufficient reading skills according to international standards and must therefore expect major difficulties in the further course of their school and professional lives.
It is therefore crucial to promote reading skills. Another IFS project – Reading with Children for Parents – therefore aims to improve reading skills. As the family environment plays an important role in promoting reading, parents are the focus of the project: what can you do as a parent if you have noticed that your child is reading very slowly or inaccurately, or if you feel that your child does not understand all the words they see in the text in front of them? Support your child in reading development and find out about reading practices and reading techniques based on scientific findings and research results in several languages.
