Project description

The project aims to promote the linguistic and academic learning development of elementary school students in Grades 3 and 4 over the course of one school year, using already evaluated approaches to language-sensitive (subject) teaching while incorporating the native languages of multilingual students in all-day schooling. To this end, language-promoting and interdisciplinary learning materials for both classroom instruction and afternoon programs related to ESD will be developed. Additionally, professional development for subject-specific language education for teachers and educational professionals will be developed and evaluated within a longitudinal quasi-experimental control group design.

To to so, teachers and educational professionals from two experimental groups will participate in professional development focused on subject-specific language education. These professional development programs are based on an already positively evaluated professional development program focusing on linguistic scaffolding, which will be adapted and expanded with elements of multilingualism pedagogy in one of the two groups. Teachers in the control group will also design their lessons using the newly developed instructional materials related to ESD, and after the project implementation, they will have the opportunity to participate in an optimized professional development program that integrates particularly successful elements from both training courses.

For assessing the effectiveness of the intervention, changes in cognitive, motivational, and emotional characteristics of teachers, educational professionals, as well as students will be examined, along with analyses of teaching and cooperation processes. To ensure sustainability and transferability, cross-school training on successful collaboration conditions will be provided, alongside establishing a school network and making the evaluated teaching materials available as Open Educational Resources.
