The field test for the International Progress in Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2026 was conducted at 50 elementary school in Germany in March. The instruments for the first completely digital main survey in spring 2026 were tested. Fourth-graders worked on reading tasks on a laptop and then answered a questionnaire. For the children, this is the second PIRLS cycle in which they are no longer taking part on paper. For the first time, their parents, teachers and school principals completed a digital questionnaire on the conditions for learning to read. The evaluation of the field test results in the coming weeks and the coordination with the international study center at Boston College and the other 58 participating countries will enable important preparations for PIRLS 2026. We look forward to the further process and would like to thank the participants for their valuable support.
