IFS Congratulates – RUB and TU Dortmund Funded as a University Consortium of Excellence

Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) and TU Dortmund University have been awarded funding as a University Consortium of Excellence under the national Excellence Strategy – congratulations! At the heart of the consortium is the Ruhr Innovation Lab (RIL), through which both universities aim to pool their strengths and further advance their world-leading international research.

The Ruhr Innovation Lab brings together the research strengths of Ruhr University Bochum and TU Dortmund University, creating a dynamic hub for cutting-edge research and innovation. By combining Bochum's interdisciplinary expertise in natural sciences, engineering, and humanities with Dortmund's focus on application-driven engineering, data science, and social sciences, the lab fosters groundbreaking advancements. By leveraging our combined strengths, we accelerate innovation, transforming ideas into impact.

The RIL brings together the expertise of the two universities across four Research Focal Areas: By transcending disciplinary borders, researchers at the Ruhr Innovation Lab tackle pressing societal challenges or unravel the final laws of nature. From green chemistry, human-centered computing, and sustainable materials to the fundamental building blocks of the universe – our research focal areas unite scientists from different disciplines exploring novel ideas and working towards solutions for a future-proof society.

Furthermore, the research expertise of the two universities is consolidated in three Areas of High Potential: Engaging Complexity – Knowledge, Media & Society; The Healthy Mind in a Complex World; and Engineering Complexity. The IFS is strongly represented in the Area of High Potential The Healthy Mind in a Complex World. In this area, research examines how technological change, social inequality, mobility, and demographic shifts shape mental health across the entire lifespan and influence educational trajectories. To this end, an interdisciplinary consortium links conceptual foundations with large-scale longitudinal data, clinical research, and real-world interventions to sustainably strengthen resilience and educational equity.
