In the session of the IFS Lecture Series “What's new in Educational Research? Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Research Projects in Empirical Educational Research” on June 30, the video study COLD was presented, which investigates teachers' professional competencies in teaching German as a second language. The focus was on the teachers' language of instruction. Professor Detmar Meurers and his collaborator Zarah Weiss (Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen) reported on computer linguistic analyses of teachers' utterances in the classroom. Specifically, they showed how the linguistic complexity of utterances varies depending on whether the teacher is speaking to the entire learning group or to individual learners. Following on from this, Inga ten Hagen of the IFS presented analyses of the variation in teachers' questions depending on the German language skills of the learners addressed.
