In the session of the IFS Lecture Series “What's new in Educational Research? Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Research Projects in Empirical Educational Research” on June 2, the keynote topic was “School Misconduct and Grade Retention”. Assoc. Professor Jannick Demanet (Ghent University) reported on the influence of school contexts on class repetition and learners' academic behavior.
Following on from this, the IFS used the NEPS project to show how school enjoyment develops in the transition to secondary school and the impact this has on learners' academic performance and enjoyment of life. In addition, it was reported that class repetition leads to a reduction in unhelpfulness in mathematics. Interestingly, no associations with achievement or socio-emotional outcomes were shown. The presentation content as well as implications for research and practice were finally discussed in the plenary session.

Many thanks for the insightful contributions and the lively discussion!
