Results of the Level-One Study (LEO, Hamburg University) show that a large amount of adults in Germany has only poor reading and writing skills. In this context, the IFS points out the essential role of reading promotion in schools for educational success and social participation. Large-scale studies such as Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) allow for identifying groups of students in need for reading promotion. Studies like this provide important information for reading and writing promotion for young learners.
