The Special Interest Group on Moral and Democratic Education (SIG 13) of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) grants the Maslovaty Award every two years to promote outstanding research in the field of democracy and moral education. This year, the Senior Research Publication Award goes to Elisabeth Graf for her publication “Classroom emotions in civic education: A multilevel approach to antecedents and effects,” which she published together with Lisa Stempfer (University of Vienna), Krista R. Muis (McGill University in Montreal), and Thomas Goetz (University of Vienna) in the journal Learning and Instruction.
The study examined how an open classroom climate during discussions of political and social issues relates to the emotions experienced by students (enjoyment, anxiety, shame, and boredom) and to what extent these emotions are related to outcomes of civic education such as political knowledge and intention to participate. Results showed that the classroom climate is a relevant predictor of experienced joy, fear, and boredom. Openness to diverse opinions was thus associated positively with enjoyment and negatively with fear and boredom experienced in civic education classes.
