Isa Steinmann, Daniel Sánchez, Saskia van Laar, and Johan Braeken published a new article in Assessment in Education: Principles Policy & Practice. The study shows that in 37 countries, between 2-36% of primary school students do not answer consistently to positively and negatively worded items (e.g., “I usually do well in mathematics” and “I am just not good at mathematics”). Since this biases dimensionality and reliability estimates, the authors recommend not to include mixed-worded scales in questionnaires for children.
