The DFG-funded study on civic literacy in adolescence (CIVIC) examines how young people's political skills develop.

The DFG-funded study on the development of civic literacy in adolescence has been successfully launched. The aim of the project is to analyze the development of political skills in young people. It examines how knowledge, motivation, attitudes, and willingness to participate in society grow during adolescence. As part of a longitudinal study, around 675 students in grades 11 and 12 as well as trainees at vocational schools are being surveyed. The study takes into account both school-related factors and extracurricular aspects such as family support and extracurricular activities. Initial results should provide insight into which components of civic literacy can be particularly promoted and whether they can compensate for social inequalities in participation. The findings are intended to support schools and education policymakers in optimizing curricula and strengthening young people's political maturity.

The project is led by Professor Nele McElvany (IFS) and Professor Thomas Goll (Institute for Didactics of Integrative Subjects). The external project partner is Dr. Corey Savage from the University of Glasgow.
