Internationally renowned guests at the 5th VKS on January 13 and 20 on the topic of “Language and Learning in multilingual families and classrooms”.

As part of the 5th IFS Virtual Key Note Series on “Language and learning in multilingual families and classrooms”, four internationally renowned researchers gave keynote speeches on their current research findings.

On January 13, Monica Melby-Lervåg from the University of Oslo, Norway, gave a talk on “Factors underlying academic performance in children living in poverty: Knowledge from low and middle income countries”. She shared research results focusing on the language and reading skills of children from socially disadvantaged countries. The second keynote was presented by Erika Hoff from the Florida Atlantic University, US, on “Common patterns and individual differences in bilingual development: Evidence from a longitudinal study of children in immigrant families”, which addressed the challenges of bilingual development in children from Spanish-speaking families in the US.
On January 20, James Kim from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, US, addressed the need for long-term solutions to tackle the reading issues faced by third-grade children in his talk “Rethinking the reading crisis: Why far transfer should be the gold standard of literacy research”. The second talk of the day was given by Fuhui Tong from the Texas A&M University, US. Her presentation on “From ESL to EFL: Localizing an evidence-based oral English curriculum with virtual professional development and home literacy practices for underprivileged elementary students” included findings from an 8-week English intervention program aimed at strengthening the oral English skills of students with Chinese as family language.

The keynotes were followed by lively discussions with interested participants from numerous countries. Thank you very much for the excellent talks and the exciting exchange!
