From June 3 to 7, 2024, experts from over 50 countries met in Riga to further concretize the implementation of the PIRLS 2026 reading literacy study.
The meeting was hosted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College, which had invited around 120 National Research Coordinators (NRC). PD Dr. Ramona Lorenz took part for Germany in her role as operational project manager.
One focus of the meeting was the detailed design of the reading texts, which around 400,000 fourth graders worldwide will answer during the survey period planned for 2026. Further implementation details were also presented and discussed, for example the planned digital administration of the questionnaires, which plays an important role in the collection of background characteristics.
The aim of the study is to compare the reading skills of pupils worldwide at the end of fourth grade. PIRLS 2026 is funded by Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) and Ständigen Konferenz der Kultusminister der Länder in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (KMK) for the survey planned in Germany.
