Professor Detmar Meurers, Dr. Kordula De Kuthy and Junior-Professor Heiko Holz presented the project “AI-supported Literacy Development in Kindergarten for Educational Success, Equity and Social Participation - A Mobile App for Authentic Language Support in Early Education” (AI-LIT) at the IFS on 27.05.2025: a mobile, AI-supported application to promote linguistic interaction at preschool age.
The aim is to digitally implement the proven concept of dialogic reading using current AI methods - as a scalable, fully automated app with digital picture books. An AI-supported dialog system interacts with children in a language-promoting way and thus systematically supports language development. The app also allows children to develop their own stories with the help of AI, which can be individually adapted to their interests and language skills.
The project combines findings from language didactics, computational linguistics and educational research and addresses key challenges of early education, equal opportunities and participation. A randomized controlled field study is investigating the effectiveness of this innovative intervention.
Thank you very much for the exciting insights into this pioneering research project!
