The new DFG project CIVIC investigates how school and extracurricular factors influence the development of political skills.

In the DFG research project “Study on Civic Literacy in Adolescence” (CIVIC), an interdisciplinary team consisting of Professor Nele McElvany, Professor Thomas Goll (Institute for Interdisciplinary Didactics), Dr. Pascal Alscher, and Jonas Thiel is investigating how civic literacy develops in young people. The term civic literacy describes knowledge, motivation, attitudes, and willingness to act for political and social participation. The aim of the project is to understand which school and extracurricular factors promote or inhibit this process and how political skills lead to active engagement in the long term.

As part of a longitudinal study, around 675 students in grades 11 and 12 as well as trainees at vocational schools are being surveyed. The data ties in with existing surveys from grades 7 to 10.

The project aims to find out how political skills develop in young people and which school and social factors promote them. The results will support schools and education policy makers in designing curricula and teaching concepts that strengthen young people's political maturity.

The CIVIC team presents the project in a short video.
