DFG Network SUBSES: Successful Sixth Meeting in Osnabrück

Members of the DFG network Influences of the Social Environment on Educational Processes of Students of Different Ethnic and Socioeconomic Backgrounds (SUBSES) met in Osnabrück on 24–25 September 2026 to further discuss and advance their joint research on how the social environment shapes the educational processes of learners from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. A central element of the meeting was the input and exchange with Professor Eddie Brummelman (University of Amsterdam), an expert on socioeconomic inequalities in education, self-concepts, and their formation in the school context. His talk "Unequal Selves: How Unequal Treatment in the Classroom Gets into Children's Heads" opened up new perspectives and provided important impulses for the subsequent, enriching discussion on pressing research questions in the field and the further development of the SUBSES network.

As Junior Professor Stang Rabrig (IFS) summarizes: "The question of how social inequalities arise, are experienced, and are processed in everyday school life is of great importance for research at the IFS as well. The exchange within the SUBSES network and the input from Eddie Brummelman have opened up exciting new perspectives in this regard. For the further development of our research, such interdisciplinary and cross-institutional discussions are particularly valuable."
