Prof. Heppt speaks at symposium “Opening doors, enabling opportunities” on language education for newly immigrated children and young people.

At the symposium organized by the Ministry of Education of Rhineland-Palatinate Opening doors, enabling opportunities – implementing the SWK recommendation 2025 “Shaping language education for newly immigrated children and young people”, Professor Heppt gave a talk on the topic of “Language diagnostics for newly immigrated children and youth: Challenges and perspectives”, focusing in particular on the hallmarks of high-quality language diagnostics and the characteristics of instruments used to assess language skills. She pointed out the dilemma that, despite high pressure to act, there is a great need for time in the development and validation of instruments and that a coordinated and interdisciplinary development of diagnostic instruments should be pursued. As part of the panel “Recognizing potential – opening up opportunities”, she discussed the results with Professor Beate Lütke from Humboldt Universität in Berlin, Professor Magdalena Michalak from Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and Professor Petra Stanat from the Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB). The event closed with cross-state specialist forums and a gallery walk.
