To mark the start of school in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Institute for School Development Research is launching the print campaign for the "Reading with children for parents" project.
This campaign promotes videos that deal with the following key questions and are available in German, Arabic and Turkish:
1. how do I recognise what problems my child is having with reading?
2. how can I improve my child's reading fluency?
3. how can I promote my child's reading comprehension?
The videos are designed for parents who want to support their children in learning to read. The first video deals with recognising problems when learning to read and gives advice on when it is advisable to consult experts, for example if dyslexia is suspected. The second video introduces the reading tandem method, a technique for improving reading fluency that parents and children can implement together with little effort. The third video explains strategies on how parents can promote their children's reading comprehension at home.
For the campaign, 300 primary schools in the Ruhr area were selected, 100 of which were low, medium and high social index schools. Using different QR codes on the flyers, it can later be analysed whether the number of views of the videos varies depending on the social index of the schools. These flyers will be distributed to schools to give parents access to the informative videos and make them aware of this valuable resource.
The aim of the project funded by Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung is to support parents in promoting family reading practices. By providing easy-to-understand explanations and practical tips, the aim is to improve children's reading behaviour. In addition, the project is investigating whether behaviour in the context of family reading promotion differs depending on the social index of schools.
