The development of reading skills depends on a number of factors, which the Center for Research on Education and School Development examines as part of Tuesdays for Education on the basis of representative IGLU data. What is the teaching quality of reading lessons at elementary school in Germany? How does reading time in Germany compare internationally? How are reading skills assessed and what reading strategies are used?
Primary school children do not attest that their teachers are sufficiently efficient in classroom management, but they feel highly cognitively activated and perceive their teachers as supportive. Furthermore, systematic diagnostic procedures are considered to be of rather low importance on average when determining competence and reading strategies that deepen understanding are used less frequently in Germany than in other EU countries.
"Overall, there is considerable potential for improvement in Germany in the areas examined. Systematic diagnostics of reading skills is of particular importance, as this is the only way to reliably record reading skills levels and initiate targeted support, whether in small groups or individually, and also using reading strategies", summarizes Professor Nele McElvany, head of the study.
