Language Competencies and Reading

At the center of the research area “Language Competencies and Reading” is the question of how children’s and adolescents’ language skills and reading competence develop, how they can be systematically assessed, and how they can be sustainably promoted. The research focuses in particular on the development of reading competence, reading motivation, vocabulary, and general language proficiency across different educational stages. The aim is to better understand learning and developmental processes, identify relevant influencing factors, develop tailored diagnostic tools, and provide evidence-based, effective support measures. A particular emphasis is placed on supporting learners with language-related or socioeconomically determined needs. Digital media and AI-supported learning environments are used to develop adaptive support offers. In addition, the role of parents as partners in early language education is taken into account in order to reduce linguistic disparities at an early stage and to promote equal opportunities.
