International school performance studies such as the International Primary School Reading Survey (IGLU), for which the IFS is responsible, the results of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) published a few days ago and the recently presented findings of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) provide indispensable information on the state of the school system in Germany. The declining skills of pupils in Germany in key skills domains such as reading, mathematics and science are worrying and send a clear signal to focus on basic skills and early systematic diagnostics and support. However, not all domains are equally affected by the downward trend, as ICCS shows for civic education. This illustrates how important it is to keep an eye on several skills domains and to review them at regular intervals in order to ensure a holistic and sustainable education - for successful individual educational careers, the quality of the school system and also for social participation and economic development.
