The latest PISA study has shown that origin and socio-economic status continue to play a major role in educational success in Germany. However, even in increasingly heterogeneous societies, this is not inevitable. "We see in international comparisons that this is much more successful in other countries, where the differences between the groups are clear," explains Professor McElvany, referring to Denmark, Finland and Hong Kong. To counter this, early language support is particularly important. "This is certainly a major challenge for the education system," says McElvany, "but at the same time, we have no other option. If you look at the demographic development in Germany, we need immigration."
