In this article, Jakob Schwerter and Taiga Brahm analyse the challenges faced by students in statistics lectures. They show how e-learning exercises with automated feedback can help the students. The study is based on interviews with 67 bachelor students of social sciences and the analysis uses, among other things, a causal machine learning method. The results suggest that these exercises improve exam performance, especially during the semester, but also shortly before the exam. Finally, the paper discusses how these findings can influence the literature on e-learning in higher education.
