Almost half of primary school children experience physical violence at their schools.

In the school context, children's well-being is at risk if they are confronted with dissocial behavior – problematic behavior by other children – in their class or school. The PIRLS 2021 survey of students shows that almost half of primary school children have experienced physical violence and over 10 percent have experienced online bullying. Overall, primary school children's experiences of dissocial behavior are similar to the EU average. In Germany, however, the difference in reading literacy between children with a lot and children with little experience of dissocial behavior is the greatest in the EU comparison.

In view of these findings, the reduction of dissocial behavior in elementary school should be a focus of educational policy and practice in Germany. Initiatives such as Tuesdays for Education help to raise awareness of the importance of a positive school environment and develop strategies to promote well-being and prevent anti-social behavior. "In the long term, such measures can not only improve the acute well-being of students, but also contribute to a more positive development of school performance such as reading literacy," states Professor Nele McElvany, leader of the study.
