Ulrich Ludewig and Ruben Kleinkorres presented methodological findings from the IFS school panel study at the 10th edition of the IEA International Research Conference (IRC) in Dublin on the conference theme "Researching Education and Learning". In their presentation on "Student Age and Trends in Large-Scale Assessment", they used data from a total of 4,290 4th grade students in 2016 and 2021 to illustrate the multifaceted relationship between age and academic achievement in school-year cohorts. The study demonstrated that simply statistically controlling for student age to adjust for trend results led to significant bias in the results, while statistically controlling for relative cohort age, enrollment status, and grade retention led to more plausible results.
