IFS on the nationwide reading day at WDR Morgenecho

On the occasion of the nationwide Read Aloud Day, Dr. Ulrich Ludewig was in conversation with Thomas Schaaf on the program "WDR Morgenecho". The program explored the question of whether insufficient reading aloud could be a possible factor for differences in reading skills. "It is highly desirable for parents to support their children in reading, but unfortunately not all parents are in a position to do so," states Ludewig. In order to tackle the problem of too many children with insufficient reading skills, it is important to work on supporting children more systematically and earlier in nurseries and schools. However, this requires adequate staffing and funding for the facilities. "It is also important," emphasizes Ludewig, "that children with language, vocabulary and grammar weaknesses are identified in good time and given targeted support to ensure that they can read well and confidently at the end of elementary school." As part of the projects "Reading with children for parents", "Language support at the start of primary school" (SPEAK) and the "International Primary School Reading Survey" (IGLU), the IFS conducts targeted research into reading promotion opportunities and reading competence levels.
