Dr. Paul Fabian contributed his expertise to the SWR2 program Wissen on the topic of "Repeating class – why the 'lap of honour' is of little use". Researchers regularly show in their studies that keeping pupils in school has no or even negative effects on performance development. Although it has been scientifically proven that "repeating class" does not have an improving effect on school success, many continue to adhere to the measure. In fact, the measure remains uncontroversial among large sections of the population, teachers and politicians. Dr. Paul Fabian explains: "A fifth of all pupils report that they have already repeated a grade themselves. Despite better methods and data, we cannot find any positive effect of grade repetition on school performance in our research – and that's where the figure really becomes almost drastic."
