Civic Education Research Lab
The Civic Education Research Lab (CERL), funded by the UA Ruhr, investigates political education and socialization processes. The aim is to examine how different learning environments and school characteristics influence the political socialization of young people and how these findings can contribute to the development of effective civic education. In addition to publishing its own research findings, CERL also plans to organize networking events for researchers.
The Civic Education Research Lab (CERL), funded for a period of 18 months by the College for Social Science and Humanities of the UA Ruhr, deals with questions of civic education and socialization processes. The aim is to conduct high-quality research on the prerequisites and characteristics of successful civic education. Specifically, it will examine how formal, non-formal and informal learning environments contribute to the political socialization of adolescents.
Second, it will shed light on which school and classroom characteristics are most effective in promoting civic learning and investigate how they vary between different countries and educational contexts. Finally, it aims to inspect how factors in adolescents‘ school and physical environments influence their political participation, interest and engagement, and how these findings can guide the implementation of effective civic education programs. The goal is to bring together findings and data from current research projects on civic education (ICCS, EPKO), longitudinal studies in education (National Educational Panel Study NEPS) and the application of data science methods in the social sciences (FAIR project).
CERL will offer a series of events to connect and promote national and international researchers working on civic education and socialization. These include an international guest lecture, a workshop to exchange ideas on projects on civic education and innovative methods for secondary data analysis, as well as a joint digital symposium with presentations from both locations.
In addition, important research questions will be addressed at CERL using innovative methods, published in high-impact journals and presented at a conference.
Interested scientists who would like to participate in events, keep up to date with planned activities or network with CERL can register for the newsletter.
