The Center for Research on Education and School Development (IFS) at the TU Dortmund University is organizing the 9th Dortmund Symposium on Empirical Educational Research on July 4, 2024. This year’s conference is dedicated to the topic „Socio-emotional and cognitive development in learning: competing educational goals?!“.

Theoretical approaches and current findings will be presented and discussed to address the question of whether these two educational goals are actually in conflict or to what extent they can support each other given certain conditions. Taking into account the normative task that all learners should acquire basic competencies, we consider the role of socio-emotional aspects – such as emotions, motivation and well-being – in learning and the question of how socio-emotional learning can be designed for heterogeneous groups. It will be discussed how contemporary educational research can enrich the multidimensional educational process to address the various educational goals.
